I want to touch on another one of the many misconceptions around weight training and really just leading a healthy lifestyle in general, and that is thinking that consuming 5-6 meals a day is necessary to either muscle building or weight loss, or both. The idea of having to eat that much – let alone prepare that much food in a healthy way – turns a lot of people away from adopting better eating habits.

            Again, let me revert back to professional bodybuilders, who are usually at the root of many of these misconceptions. Let me reiterate: professional bodybuilders are competing at the highest level of muscular development. In addition to the fact that they are taking anabolic steroids to attain their massive proportions, they must consume A LOT of food in order to maintain that much mass. And since the human digestive system can only process so much food in one sitting, these individuals are known to space their astronomic calorie intake across anywhere from 5 to up to 10 meals per day! But as I have said in a previous post, the average person just trying to get and stay in shape does not need to consume anywhere near as many calories as professional bodybuilders to achieve their goals.

            My guess is that you do not want to grow to gargantuan proportions. If you are like most people, you probably just want to a slim down and tone up. Achieving either of those goals should involve lifting weights and eating a certain amount of food. And it is highly likely that you can get that amount of food in by eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, with maybe a healthy snack or two if you’re really dying (of hunger). What it really comes down to is quality versus quantity. Try taking a closer look at what you are eating rather than how much.
