SFL Client of the Month
Pietro Miazzo and Nozomi Takashima
Congratulations to Pietro Miazzo and Nozomi Takashima, our Strength for Life Clients of the month for May.
To tell the truth, my husband and I are not athletic in the least. In our youth we never enjoyed sports or jogged: our favorite activity is reading on our couch!
A few years ago my husband decided that he should start moving, or else he would never get up from that couch. A friend told us about Strength for Life, so we decided to try it.
The thing is we knew that we needed appointments and motivation, otherwise we would find excuses not to go.
We immediately liked Ed and the atmosphere of the gym. There weren't the usual gym rats but
normal people and even older people like us.
It was very hard at first. Was it worth all the effort and frustration? It certainly helped that Ed was so supportive, and that nobody looked down on us.
Two years later, we are still working out. It is now a big part of our life, something we do as a couple. It still is hard, but we know that it is important to our health and state of mind.
So -it's never too late!
We are very happy and proud to have Pietro and Nozomi as part of our SFL community!
Congratulations to SFL Client Will Starr for completing the Boston Marathon
On April 15th, SFL client Will Starr completed the Boston Marathon. Will is a great example of someone who continually challenges himself to be hist best.
"I just wanted to say that the race itself was pure joy. 26.2 miles of downhills, some flats and then a whole bunch of up to end the day. Boston has it's own feel somehow, not like any other marathon I have run. I think it is due in part to the fact that the city has a holiday and many of the people in town come out to cheer. The people are so much more involved and knowledgeable about the event than the crowds I have seen anywhere else.
Running it in honor of my mom was just icing on the cake. She would have been proud. Now that it's over it has been my pleasure not to run for a few days and I'll slowly get back into the rhythm."
Next up? A fairly short and easy romp down Broad Street with my 40,000 best friends in two weeks."
Congratulations Will! Keep challenging yourself! You are an inspiration to all of us at SFL.
How Your Past Can Help You Achieve Your Future Goals
Setting goals is a great way to keep us motivated to accomplish the things in our life that matter most to us. Goals also help us to take action. When we write down our goals, we are more likely to do something, to take action on our goals. Goals help us focus on what’s important and more importantly eliminate tasks that are unnecessary or take us away from our
goals.
Even with all the benefits of setting and achieving goals, some people have a hard time getting started. In “Creating Your Best Life,” Caroline Adams Miller Mapp & Dr. Michaels B. Frisch recommend beginning by thinking about or writing down things that you have already accomplished in your life. Your past is a great predictor of your future. Looking at all the goals you have already completed in
your life can help motivate you for the next big life goal.
Think of all you have done in your life.

Monthly Nutrition Tip
Snacks
Snacking – Good or Bad?
Everyone snacks, but does snacking help us to reach our fitness, nutrition and weight loss goals?
For our purposes, snacking can be defined as eating or drinking outside of our regular meal schedule. We snack because we are hungry, bored, anxious, stressed, or because there is food available or out of habit.
Many fitness experts even recommend snacking throughout the day to boost your metabolism and keep your body burning calories at a higher rate than normal. Unfortunately, the evidence does not support this type of snacking. How often we eat actually has little to do with how fast our body burns calories.
Is Snacking good for Weight Loss?

What I am Reading
Non-Fiction

The main message of this book is to take massive action if you want to succeed. A fairly easy read that continuously hammers hope the message of taking massive action and being willing to do 10X more than anyone else to reach your goals and dominate your field.
The River of Doubt - Candice Millard
After losing the 1912 Presidential election to Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt embarks on a life-threatening journey down the "River of Doubt," an unexplored river in the Amazon of Brazil.
The author details every step of the journey as Roosevelt and his group battle river rapids, deadly parasites, dangerous fish and jungle animals, natives and members of their own party in an effort to map one of the last unknown rivers of South America.
Fiction
I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
It is 1976 and the world's population has been wiped out by a deadly vampire virus except for one man, Robert Neville. Robert must survive nightly attacks from living and dead vampires while trying to maintain his sanity and search for a cure to the virus.
Although not my normal reading choice, I enjoyed this classic science fiction story with an ironic finish.
